Boot time analysis and optimization

We study your system to find where the boot time goes, then fix it, so your devices come up fast and start sending useful data sooner. Delivered successfully for a client in Belgium.

Boot stages before and after analysis

What it is

  • Measurement of every boot stage: bootloader, kernel, init system, services and application.
  • Identification of the critical path: the chain of steps that actually decides when the device is ready.
  • Targeted fixes, verified by repeated boots on your hardware.

Where it fits

  • Devices that must be ready within seconds of power-on.
  • Devices that restart often, for example after a power loss in the field.
  • Products where time to first useful data matters to the customer.

How we work

Optimization starts with measurement, because the slowest-looking step is often not the one that delays the result.

  1. 1
    Measure

Timestamps from the bootloader through the kernel, init system and application, using tools such as the kernel boot log with initcall timing and systemd-analyze where it applies.

  2. 2
    Find the critical path

Separate the steps the device must wait for from the ones that can run in parallel or later.

  3. 3
    Remove, parallelize or defer

Change the kernel configuration, the init system and service order accordingly.

  4. 4
    Verify and report

Repeat the measurement over many boots and deliver a before and after report.

Boot time explorer

A typical boot split into five stages. Select measures to see how each one shortens its stage and the time until the first useful data is sent.
